Wildcard Game #7
Wildcard #7: GM Sam Shankland (NE) vs SM Jorge Sammour-Hasbun (BOS) 1-0
Arun Sharma: This game did have some errors, including an opening move order mishap, but it was a nice effort against the top Board One All Star in his only defeat of the season. A not badly played game overall with an attractive finish makes this game a reasonable addition to the GOTY Contest in my view.

How can this game make it when the winner of this game himself called the game "very bad". Doesnt he know better than the judges??
Heres my quick take on it, unlike this comment, and unlike Aruns most unenthusiastic opinion for a wildcard pick, "makes this game a 'reasonable' addition" "This game did have some errors, including an opening move order mishap", I have to say I was happy to see a game not won from the beginning, that had one of, if not the best, finishes. Not only was the ending skillful, but if you want to include the draw of the game, Jorge Sammour-Hasbun was the main attraction of the year just running through everyone with pretty uneventful but decisive wins, rarely even making one flaw. With all the hype around him, it was nice to see him get into a more slug fest type situation, and see an unexpected knockout at the end. I don't believe the voting polls when they get obscured with over 20 votes, but the fact that this game leads "Which Wildcard Game will do best in the GOTY Contest?" and "Which Wildcard Game will do worst in the GOTY Contest?" with a normal amount of votes leads me to believe even more that there was a lot of positive and negative interest in the game, where as a lot of other wildcard games and regular GOTW games were easily forgettable. I see this game honestly going as deep as 5th.
This game blows, it wont make it past 15th. Too many stupid moves, blunders opening mistakes on both sides. Nothing special.
Enough of this crap, when does the actual contest begin?
"a lot of positive and negative interest" Guess that poster was right, I too liked the game for its authentic nature and exciting finish, I could see 5th as well.
Sammour-Hasbuns most interesting game of the crop, unfortunately it was a loss, but still exciting none the less.
